Top 5 Places to Visit in Our Region of Central Portugal
For many people in the UK and Northern Europe, people associate holidays in Portugal with the Algarve or the country's stunning west coast beaches. What many people don't realise, however, is just how beautiful Central Portugal is and how much its rural regions have to offer.
During the summer, the area is bustling with activity. Not only are there incredible natural landscapes to explore and enjoy, but there are also outdoor events to attend and fascinating historical sites to discover.
So, if you're considering an off-grid stay with us and would like to experience authentic Portuguese culture and traditions, here are our top five places to visit in our region.
1. Piscina Natural do Paul
Situated in the Serra da Estrela mountains, this beautiful natural swimming spot is a hidden gem and the perfect place to cool off on a hot summer's day.
Tucked away further along the road from the main Praia Fluvial de Paul, it features a waterfall, natural pools, and a relaxed café-bar serving light snacks, ice creams, and refreshments. With laid-back vibes and stunning surroundings, it's possibly our favourite swimming spot in the area.
2. Serra da Estrela Torre
Just 18 miles from our Quinta lies the highest point in mainland Portugal - the summit of the Serra da Estrela mountain range.
Snow covers the peak for at least a quarter of the year, and there's even a small ski resort. While there are plenty of hiking routes for those who wish to climb on foot, the drive itself is breathtaking, offering incredible panoramic views across Central Portugal and into Spain.
Along the route, you'll find several cafés and viewpoints, while at the summit there is a shopping area and food court. It's an experience not to be missed during your stay in the region.
3. The Historic Village of Castelo Novo
Located on the opposite side of the Gardunha Mountains from our Quinta, Castelo Novo is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric historic villages in Central Portugal.
Built around a 12th-century medieval castle, the village boasts a rich history and charming granite streets. Several scenic walking routes lead up to the castle ruins, where you'll be rewarded with spectacular views across the surrounding countryside and into Spain.
The village even has its own Praia Fluvial (river beach), making it the perfect place to cool down with a swim after a day of exploring.
4. A Traditional Portuguese Festa
Throughout the summer months, the sleepy villages of rural Portugal come to life during Festa season.
These local celebrations showcase Portuguese culture and traditions through live music, dance, performances, arts, food, and drink, creating a fun and authentic experience for visitors of all ages.
The local tourist information office can provide details of upcoming festas and events taking place in the surrounding towns and villages during your stay.
5. Fundão Monday Market
Market day is by far the busiest day of the week in our local city of Fundão, as residents from the surrounding villages arrive to do their weekly shopping.
You'll find everything from clothing, homewares, and gardening tools to locally grown fruit and vegetables, seedlings, and even livestock. We've been known to return from the Monday Market with a few live chickens ourselves!
One of the things we love most about Portuguese culture is that market day remains an important part of everyday life. Unlike in the UK, where traditional markets have largely been replaced by convenience shopping in supermarkets, retail parks, and chain stores, many people here still prefer to buy fresh produce and local goods directly from market traders. It's a wonderful tradition that continues to thrive and offers visitors a genuine glimpse into local life.
